Canadian Citizenship in
Toronto & Mississauga

Canada offers citizenship by birth in Canada or by naturalization. Canadians who have been qualifying permanent residents for 3 years during the previous 5 years can apply for naturalization to become citizens of Canada.

Canadian Citizenship Requirements

  1. You must have been physically in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3years) during the 5 years before the date you sign your application.
  2. You have met all applicable requirements under the Income Tax Act for filing income taxes for any three taxation years that were fully or partially within five years immediately preceding your apply.
  3. You intend to live in Canada OR work abroad with or alongside certain family members who are employed in the Canadian Armed Forces, the federal public administration, or the public service in a province.
  4. Communicate in English and French (if you’re 55 years old or older, this is not required).
  5. You must be able to show, in English and French, that you have knowledge about Canada and the responsibilities, privileges, and obligations of citizenship.
  6. 18 or older.
  7. Everyone between the ages of 18 and 54 at the time they apply for Canadian citizenship must take the citizenship test unless exempt. Those who are 55 or older are not required to take the citizenship test.

Minor under 18 years old can apply for citizenship if they’re a permanent resident, have a parent who is a Canadian citizen, or is applying simultaneously for citizenship. They do not have to pass the citizenship exam, but they will need to submit a completed application.

An applicant for citizenship must be fluent in English or French and have listening skills that are compatible with the language requirements. Written proficiency is not required. One of these must be evidence of language proficiency:

 

  • Test results from an approved language test by the IRCC such as IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, and TEFAQ
  • Transcripts or diplomas demonstrating secondary or post-secondary English or French Education
  • Results of a government-funded language course showing CLB 4, NCLC 4, or higher
